The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular runs nightly through Sunday, November 1, and every night follows the same pattern. The trail opens at 6:00 p.m., timed tickets run $20 to $23 for an adult, and when the zoo's lots fill, parking attendants send cars out into the rest of Roger Williams Park.
During daylight, the same park has a separate schedule built for people who live within walking distance of the Elmwood Avenue and Broad Street gates. It includes a free open house at a historic cottage, a Halloween Saturday at the museum for $2 to $5, and a $2.2 million boardwalk on Cunliff Lake that opened in July. Hardly anyone needs a timed ticket for any of it. For South Elmwood and Washington Park, the last stretch of October comes down to knowing which calendar you're on.
After 6 p.m., the Park Runs on the Zoo's Clock
This year the Spectacular is called "The Great Pun-Kin Trail," presented by Citizens. More than 5,000 carved pumpkins are built around puns and pop-culture jokes. If you go before November 1, the details that matter are logistical:
- Tickets are online only, timed, and nonrefundable. You can't buy at the gate, and you can't swap dates. The trail runs rain or shine.
- The day of the week sets the price. Monday through Thursday are value nights at $20 for adults and $16 for children 2 to 12. Friday through Sunday are prime nights at $23 and $19. Children 1 and under get in free.
- Hours run 6:00 to 10:30 p.m. Last entry is 10:00 p.m.
- Thursdays come with an early door for some guests. On October 22 and 29, Citizens customers who buy a 6:00 p.m. slot can enter at 5:30 by showing a Citizens card or other proof that they bank there.
- Sunday, November 1 is 21 and over only. It's the final night of the season.
The trail also comes with add-ons. Before you walk the trail, you can try a five-minute virtual reality ride for $8, or $6 for zoo members. After the trail, there's the Soaring Eagle Zip Ride, 115 feet up, for $15. Zip tickets are sold only at the end of the trail, at 40 per hour.
Why the Evening Crowd Doesn't Stay at the Zoo
The zoo says outright that its lots hold fewer cars than the trail holds people. On busy nights, attendants direct drivers to park "within the greater Roger Williams Park." For 2026, the zoo added a free park shuttle on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. It serves visitors who get sent away from the lots and anyone who wants to skip the line of cars at the gate.
So on those four shuttle nights, the event pushes parked cars and shuttle stops into the wider park, not just the zoo's lots. If you want the closest spaces, premium parking costs $15 per car, first come, first served. The zoo sends drivers in through all three main entrances, Broad Street, Park Avenue, and Elmwood Avenue. It also reminds them that several park roads are one-way.
If you use the park loop for an evening walk or drive, plan around Thursday through Sunday from about 5:30 p.m. on, through November 1.
You don't need a pumpkin ticket for one evening activity. The Illuminated Swan Paddleboat Rides on Polo Lake leave from the dock next to the zoo entrance every night through November 1, from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m., weather permitting. You pay when you arrive: $12 for ages 13 and up and $8 for ages 2 to 12. La Gondola runs the rides and provides life jackets for children.
The Newest Thing in the Park Belongs to the Daylight
On July 15, the city held a ribbon cutting for the Cunliff Lake Boardwalk and Dock, dedicated in honor of Doreen Salk. According to the City of Providence, the $2.2 million project includes a 300-foot boardwalk along the lake edge, an ADA-accessible dock, waterfront viewing areas, seating, lighting, and shoreline restoration. It also separates foot traffic from car traffic along that stretch of the park.
City Council President Pro Tempore Juan Pichardo, whose Ward 9 includes the park, described what came with it in the city's announcement:
"Visitors will now have a wonderful walking experience overlooking the lake, an upgraded accessible boat ramp, and a kayak launch here at Roger Williams Park, Providence's recreation destination."
The plantings along the shoreline were designed as habitat and foraging cover for native and migratory wildlife. The signs were made with the US Fish and Wildlife Service Urban Wildlife Partnership. The Providence Journal opened its July coverage with great blue herons landing in the shallow water of Cunliff Lake, next to the new boardwalk.
The boardwalk opened in midsummer, so this is its first fall.
A Daytime Calendar Priced in Single Digits
Next to a $23 prime-night ticket, the daytime listings from the Roger Williams Park Conservancy and the zoo cost far less. These are the ones still ahead as of October 22:
| Date | Event | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu., Oct. 22 | Film screening of No Country for Mothers | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | Listed on Conservancy calendar |
| Fri., Oct. 23 & 30 | Free open houses at the Betsey Williams Cottage | 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. | Free |
| Fri., Oct. 23 & 30 | Partner Peace Walks | Noon–1:00 p.m. | Listed on Conservancy calendar |
| Sat. & Sun., Oct. 24–25 | Spooky Zoo | 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. | Included with zoo admission |
| Tue., Oct. 27 | Group Watershed Walk | 1:00–3:00 p.m. | Listed on Conservancy calendar |
| Wed., Oct. 28 | Wee-One Wednesdays, Botanical Center, ages 2–4 | 9:00–10:00 a.m. | Listed on Conservancy calendar |
| Fri., Oct. 30 | Roger Williams Park Gateway Center Anniversary Bash | 4:00–6:00 p.m. | Listed on Conservancy calendar |
| Sat., Oct. 31 | Halloween Family Fun at the Museum | 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | $2–$5 |
The Botanical Center's Poison Plant Tour and Skelly Hunt also runs through October 31. It's a self-guided tour during regular hours, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and it's free with admission. The Botanical Center is closed Mondays, so October 26 is out. At Spooky Zoo, kids can trick-or-treat, meet costumed characters, and watch animal enrichment, weather permitting.
Thursdays are the cheapest day at the zoo itself. Through December 31, 2026, Thursday admission is $10. That means on October 22 and 29, a daytime visit costs half of a value-night pumpkin ticket.
Two Dates When Both Calendars Meet
On two days, the daytime and evening calendars share the park.
Sunday, October 25. Spooky Zoo runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two hours later, Carving with the Pros begins at 5:00 p.m. and runs until 9:00. The Spectacular opens at 6:00 that night at prime-night prices, and it's a Sunday, so the shuttle is running.
Saturday, October 31. The Museum of Natural History and Planetarium holds Halloween Family Fun from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at $2 to $5. Two hours after it ends, the pumpkin trail opens for a prime Saturday night, with the shuttle running.
The next night, Sunday, November 1, the zoo holds Last Call, its 21-and-over finale, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The paddleboats also make their last run that night. After that, the Spectacular is over for the year. On Saturday, November 21, the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium leads a $3 bird walk from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. With the evening crowds gone by then, a morning walk on the Cunliff Lake boardwalk is easy to add.
If a walk around Cunliff Lake has you curious about what's for sale near the Elmwood Avenue gates, Baker 21 Realty can tell you which streets nearby are listing now. We're happy to talk it over whenever you're ready.
